About Mimi Porat (she/her)…

Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know me and to learn about my practice. As a counselor, I have a strong passion for social justice, and want to do good work that is meaningful and that contributes to my community.  My personal experiences as an educator both abroad and in the Madison area were defining for me, and inspired me to pursue a career in mental health. I have worked closely with individuals and families who have experienced significant trauma in their lives, and have been witness to personal and painful suffering. I know that it can be scary to open yourself up to someone new. Please know that it is my job to follow your lead, ensure that you feel safe, and guide you towards your therapeutic goals in a gentle and supportive way.

On a more personal note, I have been living in Madison, Wisconsin for 16 years now, enough time for me to have a strong connection to my community and to feel that this is my home! I love going for walks, spending time with my family, eating food with friends, reading, and relaxing on the couch.

Education and Experience

I began my professional career in 2012 after earning a degree in Special Education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 2019, I completed a master’s degree in Counselor Education, with a focus on Marriage and Family Therapy, from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. My clinical experience spans a range of mental health settings, including work with veterans facing complex mental health challenges, children and families impacted by childhood sexual abuse, adults processing the long-term effects of early trauma, and couples navigating relational challenges and communication difficulties.

My current focus for my practice includes working with individuals and couples experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, family strife, grief, loss, and challenges related to being part of a marginalized community or identity.

My therapeutic approach is rooted in person-centered and humanistic counseling, emphasizing the importance of a safe, supportive, and collaborative therapeutic relationship. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and incorporate trauma-informed practices to meet each client with empathy, respect, and flexibility—honoring their unique path toward healing and growth.
